Swift Move to Restore Malaysiakini

By Alex Lam | March 9, 2008

For the more technically savvy and those who really want to know a bit more about whois, IP Addresses, DNS, etc… here’s some info for you.

Looks like Malaysiakini stepped in really swiftly to update their domain name record to change their DNS servers. Here’s how their record looked like pre-midnight.

Domain Name: malaysiakini.com

Status: clientTransferProhibited

Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com

Expiration Date: 2011-04-14
Creation Date: 1999-04-14
Last Update Date: 2007-08-16

Name Servers:
ns1.sitelutions.com
ns2.sitelutions.com
ns3.sitelutions.com
ns4.sitelutions.com
ns5.sitelutions.com

And in a swift move, after their DNS failed to serve out the right IP addresses, they changed it to the following:

Domain Name: MALAYSIAKINI.COM
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
Name Server: NS51.WORLDNIC.COM
Name Server: NS52.WORLDNIC.COM
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Updated Date: 08-mar-2008
Creation Date: 14-apr-1999
Expiration Date: 14-apr-2011

Speculations from some say they were generating so much DNS traffic that sitelutions shut it down. Incidentally, it is HIGHLY likely that MalaysiaKini was using a free service for DNS (*GASP*) - read more here. It obviously didn’t jive with their Acceptable Use Policy which states:

For free DNS users regularly receiving more than 25 DNS requests per second or 500,000 DNS requests per day, Sitelutions reserves the right to terminate service instantly or make DNS modifications (such as modify TTL to reduce load on Sitelutions servers or modify the data returned by DNS queries. Account suspension or termination may be done without notifying the Sitelutions user.

Ooops… Maybe you shouldn’t have gone with a FREE service, eh? Well, I wish you all the best, and hope the changes are reflected soon, so that the TRUTH about what is going on at the elections will be made available to more people.
